Hasani Bhawani Mahila Uddhami Samuha is a women entrepreneurs’ group in Lumbini Province, awarded a third-batch DGM Nepal competitive small grant. Its sub-project establishes a duna tapari leaf plate industry, producing bowls and plates from sal and other broadleaf forest leaves. The business model works particularly well for a women’s enterprise group: leaves are gathered from forest and roadside trees rather than purchased, no land is required, start-up costs are modest, and the market is expanding as caterers, temples, hotels and institutions across the Terai move away from plastic and thermocol tableware. Grant funds are expected to cover leaf-plate pressing machines and dies, a production shed, organised collection arrangements, packaging and market linkage. Mechanised pressing raises output and consistency well above hand-stitched plates, which is what allows entry into institutional supply. The sub-project matches DGM Nepal’s priorities on women-led enterprise and renewable non-timber forest products.
