Kuwari Than Magar Bheja is a bheja, the traditional customary institution through which Magar communities govern shared resources and community affairs, operating in Lumbini Province. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project plants cardamom, cinnamon and broom grass together, a well-judged combination for hill land. The three occupy different niches and mature on different timescales: broom grass establishes fast on slopes, controls erosion and is cut annually from the first or second year; cardamom grows in moist shade beneath tree cover; and cinnamon is a long-lived tree yielding leaf and bark for decades. Together they give early, medium and long-term returns from one landholding while building permanent vegetation cover. Grant funds are expected to cover planting material, plantation establishment, drying and grading facilities, and training. Channelling the enterprise through the bheja directly serves DGM Nepal’s aim of strengthening Indigenous customary institutions for natural resource management.
