NEFIN Parsa is the district chapter of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, the national umbrella body of Nepal’s Indigenous peoples, based on Main Road, Birgunj-06, Parsa. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project produces banana fibre and creates self-employment around it. The approach is notable for using what is normally waste: after a banana plant fruits, its pseudostem is cut down and discarded, yet that stem yields a strong natural fibre that can be spun and woven into bags, mats, rope, paper and craft goods with growing demand in eco-conscious markets. Raw material therefore costs almost nothing and requires no new land or tree falling. Grant funds are expected to cover fibre extraction machines, drying and processing equipment, a work shed, weaving and product training, and market linkage. The sub-project offers Indigenous households in the Birgunj area a low-input enterprise, matching DGM Nepal’s focus on green jobs for forest-dependent communities.
