Nepal Magar Mahila Sangh, municipal committee in Dang, is the women’s wing of the national federation of the Magar Indigenous nationality. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project produces chiuri ghee. Chiuri, Diploknema butyracea, is the Nepalese butter tree, a species of deep cultural and economic importance in the mid-hills and inner Terai: its seeds yield a solid vegetable fat used in cooking, soap and cosmetics, its flowers support prized honey production, and the tree itself is traditionally protected and in some communities passed down as inherited property. Because the harvest is the seed, the tree is never felled, making this an exemplary non-timber forest product enterprise. Grant funds are expected to cover seed collection arrangements, oil-extraction and filtering equipment, a processing space, packaging, quality standards and market linkage. The sub-project matches DGM Nepal’s emphasis on Indigenous women-led enterprise built on traditional forest knowledge.
