Nepal Majhi Utthan Sangh, Madhesh Province, is the provincial committee of the national federation of the Majhi Indigenous nationality, based at Bardibas-03, Mahottari. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project produces handmade paper, one of Nepal’s best-established forest-based export industries. Nepali handmade paper is made from the inner bark of shrubs harvested from forest, and the plants regenerate from the cut stump, so a well-managed stand supplies bark on a rotating cycle indefinitely without felling. The product has long-standing domestic demand and a substantial export market in stationery, gift wrap, lampshades, and packaging. Grant funds are expected to cover pulping and cooking equipment, drying frames, a production shed, quality and design training, and market linkage. The enterprise gives Majhi households a manufacturing income that does not depend on land ownership or on the declining river livelihoods the community traditionally relied upon, matching DGM Nepal’s targeting of forest-dependent Indigenous groups.
