Tharu Kalyankari Sabha is a Tharu community welfare organisation in Lumbini Province, awarded a third-batch DGM Nepal competitive small grant. The Tharu are among Nepal’s largest and most forest-dependent Indigenous nationalities. The organisation’s sub-project establishes a rattan product enterprise, working with the climbing palm cane harvested from Terai forests. Rattan is a strong choice for a community enterprise: the cane is cut from the vine without felling host trees, it regenerates, and it produces furniture, baskets, screens and household goods that command higher prices than bamboo equivalents because the material is scarcer and the finish more refined. Grant funds are expected to cover harvesting and processing tools, steam-bending and treatment equipment, a workshop, skilled craft training and market linkage. Treatment and finishing largely determine the price a rattan product fetches, so investment at that stage matters most. The enterprise builds directly on Tharu forest knowledge and craft tradition.
