Banshakti Samudayik Ban Upavokta Samuha is a community forest user group at Sarawal and Bardaghat Rural Municipality-10, Birta, Nawalparasi (West), Lumbini Province. Its DGM Nepal second-batch sub-project produces forest-based compost manure, converting leaf litter, forest floor debris, pruning residue and other organic material from the community forest into a marketable organic fertiliser. The model is unusual and well matched to DGM Nepal’s aims: it generates income from material that is otherwise unused, requires no felling, and returns nutrients to farmland in a district where chemical fertiliser is costly and often in short supply. Grant funds are expected to cover composting pits or sheds, shredding and turning equipment, quality testing, bagging and packaging, and training in composting technique and marketing. Revenue accrues to the user group and can be reinvested in forest management, creating a direct financial link between well-managed forest and community benefit consistent with the project’s design.
