Nepal Majhi Mahila Uthan Sangha organises women of the Majhi, an Indigenous nationality traditionally dependent on rivers and riverside forests for fishing and ferrying, and is based at Bardibas-03, Mahottari. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project combines non-timber forest product processing with fruit plantation, giving members both an immediate income stream from processing gathered forest products and a longer-term asset in fruit trees. This diversification matters for Majhi households, whose traditional river-based livelihoods have been eroded by dam construction, sand mining and declining fish stocks. Grant funds are expected to cover processing and drying equipment, a workspace, fruit saplings and plantation establishment, and training in both value addition and orchard management. Because the processing side draws on products harvested without felling trees, and the plantation side adds new tree cover, the sub-project advances DGM Nepal’s aims of forest-linked livelihoods and enhanced carbon stocks simultaneously.
