Civil Awareness Society Nepal is an organisation in Lumbini Province awarded a third-batch DGM Nepal competitive small grant. Its sub-project covers timmur nursery, plantation and processing, spanning the full chain for one of Nepal’s highest-value non-timber forest products. Timmur, Sichuan pepper from Zanthoxylum armatum, is a thorny shrub harvested for its aromatic fruit husk, traded as a spice and in traditional medicine with strong domestic demand and export to India. Integrating all three stages addresses the two bottlenecks that limit the crop: scarce quality planting material, which the nursery solves, and poor post-harvest handling, since most collectors sell undried and ungraded fruit for a fraction of what properly processed timmur earns. Grant funds are expected to cover nursery infrastructure, plantation establishment, drying, cleaning and grading equipment, packaging and buyer linkage. Cultivation also relieves harvest pressure on wild stands while adding perennial cover.
