AFFON Arghakhanchi is the district chapter of the Association of Family Forest Owners Nepal, an umbrella body of smallholder family forest farmers established in 2015 that federates roughly 12,000 farmers across 65 districts and reports stewardship of more than 60,000 hectares, about 30 percent of its members being Indigenous Peoples. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project cultivates and promotes timmur, Sichuan pepper from Zanthoxylum armatum, one of Nepal’s highest-value non-timber forest products. Timmur is a thorny shrub harvested for its aromatic fruit husk, traded as a spice and in traditional medicine with strong demand domestically and in India. Grant funds are expected to cover quality planting material, plantation on member land, post-harvest drying and grading, and training in cultivation and marketing. Domesticating a species otherwise stripped from the wild eases pressure on natural stands while adding permanent perennial cover to Arghakhanchi’s hill slopes.
