AFFON Pyuthan is the Pyuthan district chapter of the Association of Family Forest Owners Nepal, the umbrella body of smallholder family forest farmers established in 2015, based at Sarumarani Rural Municipality-3, Dhuwakot, Pyuthan, Lumbini Province. Its second-batch DGM Nepal sub-project plants two high-value mid-hill non-timber forest products: tejpat, Indian bay leaf from Cinnamomum tamala, and timmur, Sichuan pepper from Zanthoxylum armatum. Both are perennial tree and shrub crops well suited to Pyuthan’s hill slopes, both are harvested for leaf, bark or fruit without felling, and both have established buyers in Nepal’s spice and herbal trade as well as export demand. Grant funds are expected to cover quality planting material, plantation establishment on member land, post-harvest drying and grading, and training in cultivation and marketing. Domesticating species otherwise gathered from the wild eases pressure on natural stands while adding permanent tree cover and long-term income for family forest households.
