Bakhariya Ultawa Tharu Samaj is a Tharu community organisation in Lumbini Province, awarded a third-batch DGM Nepal competitive small grant. The Tharu are among Nepal’s largest Indigenous nationalities and among the most forest-dependent, historically living alongside and drawing livelihoods from the Terai forests. The organisation’s sub-project establishes a duna tapari enterprise producing leaf bowls and plates stitched or pressed from sal and other broadleaf forest leaves. This is a genuine non-timber forest product business: leaves are gathered without harming trees, the resource renews each season, raw material costs only collection labour, and demand is growing as caterers, temples and institutions replace plastic and thermocol tableware. Grant funds are expected to cover pressing machines and dies, a production shed, collection arrangements and marketing. Because the enterprise needs no land, it works for Tharu households whose access to farmland is limited, matching DGM Nepal’s targeting.
