FEDO was founded in 1994 by a group of Dalit women to fight caste and gender discrimination, and has grown into one of Nepal’s leading organisations for Dalit women’s rights, with a presence across all seven provinces and a network of thousands of women’s groups and tens of thousands of members. Economic empowerment is one of its core programme pillars. Under this third-batch DGM Nepal grant, FEDO establishes a duna and tapari leaf plate enterprise. The trade suits Dalit women well: leaves are gathered from sal and other broadleaf forest trees without felling, raw material costs almost nothing, no land is needed, and demand is rising as caterers and institutions shift away from plastic and thermocol. Grant funds are expected to cover pressing machines and dies, a production shed, collection arrangements and marketing. The sub-project sits squarely within DGM Nepal’s scoring priority for Dalit women-led applicants.
