The Freed Kamalari Development Forum is led by former kamlaris, Tharu women and girls who were placed into indentured domestic servitude under a system formally abolished by the Nepali government in July 2013. Built with support from the Nepal Youth Foundation and independent since 2020, FKDF operates a network of local cooperatives, savings groups and self-help groups across western Nepal, based in Dang. Its third-batch DGM Nepal sub-project establishes a duna-tapari leaf plate enterprise. The fit is deliberate: leaf plates require no land, raw material is gathered free from forest trees without felling, and the work can be organised through the group structures FKDF already runs. Grant funds are expected to cover pressing machines and dies, a work shed, collection arrangements and marketing. For women whose bondage began in landlessness and debt, an enterprise that generates income without requiring land carries particular significance alongside DGM Nepal’s forest objectives.
