Kharkattital Community Forest User Group manages forest in Lumbini Province and falls within the community-based forest management category explicitly prioritised under DGM Nepal’s competitive grants. Its third-batch sub-project develops a non-timber forest product enterprise based on rattan and bamboo. Both are genuinely renewable: bamboo regenerates from the same clump after cutting and can be harvested annually, while rattan cane is cut from the climbing palm without felling host trees. Between them they supply furniture, baskets, mats, screens, poles and handicrafts with reliable demand across Lumbini’s towns. Grant funds are expected to cover harvesting and processing tools, treatment and seasoning equipment which largely determine durability and price, a production shed, craft and enterprise training for user-group members, and market linkage. Because raw material comes from the group’s own managed forest, harvesting stays within sustainable limits while enterprise income strengthens the incentive to protect and regenerate that forest.
