Mithila Uthan Kendra operates in the Mithila cultural region at Laxminiya Rural Municipality-1, Sohani, Dhanusha, Madhesh Province. Its second-batch DGM Nepal sub-project develops non-timber forest product enterprise based on khar vine and grass craft, drawing on a long-standing Mithila and Terai tradition in which women weave baskets, mats, storage containers and decorative items from locally harvested grasses and fibres. The grant supports organised collection of raw material, weaving tools, production and finishing space, design and quality training, and market linkage so that products move beyond household use into commercial sale. Grass and vine craft is a strong fit for DGM Nepal because it generates cash income directly from forest and wetland resources without felling trees, requires little land, and rests on skills women already hold. The sub-project also helps sustain traditional Mithila craft knowledge while formalising it as a source of household income for forest-dependent families.
