Nepal Women Community Service Center is a women’s organisation in Lumbini Province, selected in the third batch of DGM Nepal competitive small grants. Its sub-project establishes a cinnamon plantation and processing enterprise, working with the mid-hill cinnamon species whose aromatic leaves, known in Nepal as tejpat, and bark are traded into the domestic spice market and exported. Cinnamon is a durable investment: the tree is perennial, leaves can be harvested repeatedly without killing it, and a well-managed stand yields for decades while adding permanent forest cover. The commercial gap lies in post-harvest handling, since undried and ungraded leaf sells for a fraction of what properly processed material earns. Grant funds are expected to cover quality seedlings, plantation establishment, drying and grading facilities, distillation or packaging equipment, and training. Cultivating rather than stripping wild trees also reduces pressure on natural stands, matching DGM Nepal’s aims.
