Newa Dya Dabu is a Newar community organisation operating in Lumbini Province, selected in the third batch of DGM Nepal competitive small grants. Its sub-project develops commercial beekeeping. Apiculture is a strong fit for a forest-linked grant scheme because it generates income from standing forest without removing anything from it: bees forage on forest and farm flowering species, and honey yields depend directly on the health and diversity of surrounding vegetation, giving beekeepers a financial stake in protecting it. Nepali forest honey, particularly from chiuri, mustard and wild flora, has established domestic demand and premium niches. Grant funds are expected to cover hives and bee colonies, protective equipment, extraction and bottling apparatus, and training in colony management, disease control and honey handling. Beekeeping needs very little land, so it suits households with small holdings, and it also improves pollination for surrounding crops and forest regeneration.
