Salleri Rajbriksha Community Forest User Group manages community forest in Lumbini Province and belongs to the community-based forest management category prioritised in DGM Nepal’s competitive grant eligibility. Its third-batch sub-project develops bamboo handicraft production, converting bamboo grown and harvested on community forest land into baskets, mats, decorative items and household goods rather than selling raw poles at low margins. Bamboo is well suited to this: it regenerates from the same clump after cutting, reaches harvestable size within a few years, and can be cut annually without depleting the stand. Grant funds are expected to cover craft tools and processing equipment, treatment and seasoning for durability and pest resistance, a work shed, design and skills training for user-group members, and market linkage. Income accrues to the user group and is typically reinvested in forest protection, creating the direct link between conservation and household benefit that underpins the grant scheme.
