Samunnati Allo and Dhaka Udhyog is a textile enterprise in Lumbini Province, selected in DGM Nepal’s third batch of competitive small grants. Its sub-project processes allo and dhaka together. Allo is fibre from the Himalayan giant nettle, Girardinia diversifolia, harvested from mid-hill forests: the stem bark is stripped, boiled, beaten, spun by hand and woven into a strong, distinctive textile with established niche and export demand. Only the stem is cut, so the plant regenerates annually and the enterprise draws income directly from standing forest. Dhaka is Nepal’s handwoven geometric-patterned cloth, best known from the dhaka topi, and combining the two lets the workshop offer both a forest-fibre product and a familiar high-turnover fabric. Grant funds are expected to cover fibre processing and spinning equipment, looms, a weaving space, dyeing and finishing training, and market linkage, supporting traditional forest-based skills.
