Ram Laxman Samudayik Ban Upavokta Samuha is a community forest user group in Lumbini Province, falling within the community-based forest management category that DGM Nepal explicitly prioritises for competitive grants. Its third-batch sub-project establishes a duna tapari leaf plate enterprise. For a forest user group this is a particularly clean fit: the raw material is sal and other broadleaf leaves gathered from the group’s own managed forest, collection causes no damage and the leaves regrow each season, so the enterprise monetises the forest without reducing it. Demand is strong and growing as caterers, temples and institutions replace plastic and thermocol tableware. Grant funds are expected to cover leaf-plate pressing machines and dies, a production shed, organised collection arrangements and marketing. Revenue accruing to the user group is typically reinvested in forest protection, reinforcing the link between conservation and community benefit at the heart of DGM Nepal’s design.
