Trisuli Samudayik Ban Upavokta Samuha is a community forest user group in Lumbini Province, one of the community-based forest management groups given priority under DGM Nepal’s grant eligibility criteria. Its third-batch sub-project covers medicinal and aromatic plant, or jadibuti, plantation and processing. This addresses a real structural problem in Nepal’s herbal trade: much of the country’s medicinal plant supply still comes from wild collection, which has depleted several species, while collectors sell raw, ungraded material at a fraction of its processed value. Cultivating selected species on community forest land and processing them locally into dried, graded or powdered product relieves harvest pressure and captures far more margin. Grant funds are expected to cover planting material and nursery establishment, plantation on forest land, drying, grinding and packaging equipment, quality standards and linkage with herbal processors. The enterprise gives the user group direct financial returns from well-managed forest.
