RDN Nepal is a development organisation in Lumbini Province, selected in the third batch of DGM Nepal competitive small grants. Its sub-project establishes a bamboo and rattan product enterprise. Both are among the most commercially viable forest commodities in the region: bamboo establishes quickly on marginal and riverside land and regenerates from the same clump after cutting, while rattan, a climbing palm cane, is harvested from forest without felling host trees. Together they supply furniture, baskets, mats, panels, poles and handicrafts with steady demand across Lumbini’s towns. Grant funds are expected to cover processing machinery, treatment and seasoning equipment which largely determine product durability and price, a production shed, skills training and market linkage. Treatment against borers and fungus is where most small bamboo and rattan ventures fail commercially, so investment at that stage substantially raises value. The enterprise creates green jobs consistent with DGM Nepal’s objectives.
