United Youth Community is a youth organisation in Lumbini Province awarded a third-batch DGM Nepal competitive small grant. Its sub-project is unusually integrated, covering bamboo and rattan product manufacture together with bamboo plantation and nursery establishment, so the enterprise controls the whole chain from propagation through to finished goods. The nursery component matters: bamboo planting material is often the binding constraint for community bamboo enterprises across the Terai, and a working nursery both supplies the group’s own plantations and earns revenue selling seedlings to neighbouring groups and local government greening programmes. Grant funds are expected to cover nursery infrastructure and propagation material, plantation establishment, processing machinery, treatment and seasoning facilities, a production shed and technical training. Locating this with a youth organisation targets the group most likely to migrate for work. Cultivated bamboo also reduces harvesting pressure on natural stands while sequestering carbon rapidly.
