Kabila Cooperative is based in Lumbini Province and was awarded a third-batch DGM Nepal competitive small grant. Its sub-project combines bamboo plantation with a handicraft enterprise making bamboo cups, glasses and bowls. The product focus is commercially astute: bamboo tableware sells at a considerable premium over baskets and poles, targets the same shift away from plastic that is driving demand for leaf plates, and appeals to hotels, cafes and the tourist market as well as to gift and export buyers. Producing the raw material as well as the finished goods means the cooperative controls quality and supply rather than depending on traders. Grant funds are expected to cover rhizomes and plantation establishment, lathes and finishing machinery, treatment and seasoning equipment, a workshop and skills training. Cooperative structure allows shared equipment, pooled marketing and reinvested surplus, and cultivated bamboo relieves pressure on natural stands.
